If Capitol Hill Friends were a sapling tree, we would perhaps only see a thin, tender stalk and a few leaves showing above the surface. Yet, we are experiencing a lot of development below ground.

… “The most spiritually-charged and powerful moment for me this weekend was Friday evening, when we gathered to hear Peter
Collins preach.  He spoke to us about the importance of doubt in our walk with God. Rollins observed that Christ himself cried out in doubt on the cross, and he emphasized the need to release our comforting beliefs and sense of identity, because they in fact separate us from God.” …

… We believe that God wants to open a welcoming space for Friends from across North America - and across the branches of Quakerism - to come together and know one another in the Spirit of Christ. I am convinced that God is active in guiding and preparing this conference. God is in control, in a very real sense, and I can only look on in awe as the Holy Spirit prepares us for what we are to see, experience and learn this Memorial Day weekend. …

Metro plans to curtail its expensive-to-operate transit alternative for the elderly and disabled just as ridership for the service is projected to grow 50 percent over the next four years.

Dear Children of the Day,

Greetings in the love of Christ. The last month has been full of work and blessings, and there is much to report. The Big Health Care Reform Vote is Here

This weekend, the US House of Representatives will be voting on the health care reform bill that we have heard about for so long. I’m not naïve enough to think that this bill is perfect - or even close to the kind of reform I would like to see, frankly. However, I do think that it is a step forward, and it’s time to pass the bill, despite its flaws.

The vote is going to be very tight, and one vote either way really could decide it. Will you please call your representative and ask him or her to vote “yes” for the health care reform bill?

The number for the capitol switchboard is: (202) 224-3121. Just ask for your representative’s office (if you don’t know who it is, you can find out here: http://house.gov/). I called just a few minutes ago, and it was really easy.

Thanks for considering taking a couple of minutes to help move our country in a healthier direction.
